Crazy About Your Mac?

When my HP crashed during my first-year of college, I thought, “Well, it’s time to get a new computer.” So I got a Dell and I won’t lie, I loved it. But less than two years later, my Dell is currently having over heating problems to the point that it hurts to touch the keyboard.

According to Google, over-heating problems on Dells are not “uncommon.” But to the point that it hurts to touch the keyboards? Needless to say, it’s time to give the Mac a try.

Since I secured a paid internship this summer, I’ve made up my mind on getting a 13” Macbook Pro in about 2-3 weeks. (My Adobe Creative Suit is doing a happy jiggle.) So if you’re a proud owner of a Macbook, I want to hear about all your favorite Macbook things. I want to know your favorite Mac programs, shortcuts (geezus, I’m going to have to relearn all my shortcuts!), tricks and so on!

Go crazy.

I know your pain. ;A; My toshiba currently experiences the same heating problems, and sometimes it gets so hot it freezes and lags constantly very badly, and I end up having to shut it down and set it near a fan just so I can turn it back on.

I’ve considered getting a Mac, but it would be a while until I can work up the money for it, so I considered getting a dell as replacement since I need one for school very soon ~__~; Now I’m somewhat scared to get one…

Why don’t you invest in a laptop cooler and save up the money? It’ll extend the life of your dell and in the future you could get a better macbook pro.

Keep in mind that the 13in is still running on a previous generation of cpus. Not really worth all that money if it’s still on an old processor.

Macs do, in fact, last years and years.

Snow Leopard is actually SMALLER than Leopard. I have never seen a Windows OS get smaller in size.

Most schools have software for free or discount. Office is only good because everyone else uses it. Keynote is superior to Powerpoint in every way possible. Excel runs shit, can’t deny that. Word vs Pages is personal preferences and use cases, honestly. Pages is very strong in layout, which Word really can’t do at all.

Battery life is insane.

Most Windows shortcuts translate over to Mac shortcuts. Those that don’t, there’s probably a better one for Mac.

You’ll have to adjust to the program vs windows aspect and closing vs quitting aspect of Mac OS. You’ll also have to adjust to the lack of full screen on (most) applications. You’ll soon realize that full screen is not really needed.

Scrolling down with two fingers on the pad is genius.

Macs are awesome.

Awad, you already know this, but just to have it written down…you’re going to be teaching me how to become a genius with a Mac.

Don’t own one, but can confirm that our Help Desk has had enough trouble with the Dells over the last 12-18 months that we’ve switched to ordering mostly Thinkpads along with, yes, Macs…

It hurts to touch the keyboard of my hp pavilion when I have it on for more than 2 hours, and I thought I got scalded one time while lingering too long.

I got a cooling pad. Problem solved. It’s still warm, but it isn’t an issue at all anymore.

Which cooling pad did you get? Is it really heavy? Do you always have to carry it out?

I’m sure the cooling pad would solve my heating problems, but I don’t think computers should have heating problems to begin with.

I just saw this on my facebook newsfeed and began reading this. I myself have owned my Macbook since the starting of college.
I also originally planned on getting a Dell laptop, but due to backorders, I decided on getting a Macbook. Let me tell you: best decision ever.
Once I turn Mac, I can never go back.
In my opinion, the Macbook is amazing. Although at first, you feel like it is written in a foreign language, you will quickly get used to it.
I have upgraded Leopard to Snow Leopard (current version of the OS) and I can tell you, both version of the Mac OS is definitely way faster than Windows. You can literally shut down your laptop in 3 seconds, probably the time it takes to close the screen.
About Mac programs, my favorite programs include iPhoto, iMovies, and Boot Camp. iPhoto is helpful for organizing photos and can upload directly to your facebook. iMovies is just fun if you want to make a slideshow or a short video. It’s easy to pick up and not hard to master the effects. Boot Camp is a big plus to Macbooks. If you have a Windows CD, you can use Boot Camp to install Windows on your laptop too! This has been useful for me when I need to use a Windows-only application in school.
In my opinion, iWorks was a waste of money. If your school does provide you with free softwares (which most of them do), don’t waste your money getting iWorks. Just download Microsoft Office for Mac from your school(you should check if they have). iWorks was super confusing for me and if you’re used to the old fashion Microsoft Office setup, you will find the Microsoft Office for Mac is the same as the Windows version.
Hope my response was helpful. Have fun with your Macbook!

P.S. You will probably always get fingerprints on it.

Thanks for all the great feedback, Jeffrey! Especially the part about the Boot Camp…I’ve never heard of it, but I’ll look into it.

Did you get the Apple Care? Do you find it useful?

I happen to have the MacBook Pro you want and got it 2 weeks ago. The transition from PC to Mac is not entirely difficult. While I think some of the price is for Apple’s great design, the capabilities are an up from PCs. Programs are run more smoothly, battery life is up more than 300%. The only downside I see is that it does not come with Microsoft Office so all software will need to be purchased (iLife programs are included with purchase). One of the biggest ups to a Mac I hear is that it will last years and years.

Thanks for the input Andy! Did you buy the Apple Care?
